Organize students into small circles of 6-8 people. Assign someone in each circle to be number 1, and have the students number off so that each person has a number. Teach students the following pattern:
Stomp, Stomp - Stomp right foot, then left foot Clap, Clap - Clap hands together two times Snap, Snap - Snap fingers of right hand, then snap fingers of left hand
Tell students that everyone will follow the same pattern. Instruct students that when you call their number, they should say it out loud on the first snap, then call out another number in the group on the second snap. The next person repeats his number on the first snap, then calls out another number on the second snap. Continue the pattern until every student has had the opportunity to call out his number.
Line students up into two to three rows for a relay competition. Define for students the area they must travel when it's their turn. The team whose members successfully complete the course first is the winner. Try the options:
Organize students into pairs. Each person should have a small ball or object (e.g., wadded paper or an eraser). Have partners face each other. The first person performs an exercise (e.g., weave the ball between the legs, circle it around the waist, toss and catch, etc.). The other partner mirrors the action. Then the second partner performs an exercise and the other one mirrors it. Students continue taking turns to create new movements.
Prepare a list of review questions about the health lesson. Organize students into small circles. Give each group of students a ball to pass around within the circle. Play some lively music and have students begin to pass the ball. Stop the music, select one of the circles, and have the person who has the ball answer a review question. Others in the student's circle may help if the student cannot answer the question. Resume the music and the ball passing for a short time, then stop the music and ask the student holding the ball in another group the next question.
