Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year! No matter how old we are, September is the month in which we anticipate exciting new beginnings. We at Glencoe/McGraw-Hill want to welcome you as we launch our new and improved version of Glencoe's new Health and Fitness Update. Glencoe/McGraw-Hill will publish this e-newsletter monthly during the school year to provide additional support to you, our middle school and high school health teachers and educators.
This year the's Health and Fitness Updates will focus on a monthly theme, such as "differentiated instruction" or "family and community involvement." Feature articles related to that theme will help you teach more effectively by focusing on pedagogical issues in the health education classroom. Our wide array of Glencoe/McGraw-Hill health education materials and online learning and multimedia tools that support these teaching strategies will also be featured, along with teaching tips and ideas from your peers across the nation. We have divided the newsletter into several broad arenas, each with regularly recurring sections:
Glencoe/McGraw-Hill salutes you for taking on the challenge, and we are here to help.
Lifelong wellness is a practice and a philosophy that individuals learn both formally and informally. As educators, you know that behaviors such as choosing healthy foods and being physically active are important life skills-as important as the academic skills assessed on state exams. And you know your students' academic success is affected by their individual health. But remember how invincible you felt when you were young? Your students feel the same way, which presents a challenge in encouraging them to make healthy choices.
We know that school is a great place for students to learn and practice these skills, formally through health education and informally through community programs and resources. And what the students learn, they will take with them forever, in their personal lives and into their communities.
